Good news! Halfmile’s PCT maps are completely free and it’s all you need to find your way on the trail. Halfmile also provides free mobile apps that tap into your phone’s GPS pinpointing exactly where you are at any given moment. You don’t need service in order to have these apps work. In a way using this app makes navigation too easy and sometimes controls where you end up hiking too. There are lots of cool places not found in these apps, you should talk with locals and do your own research as well. But I will admit that using Halfmile’s app saved me many miles especially when hiking in the dark!

If you want to spend a little bit of money you can purchase Gutook’s PCT guide app which gives you more information and a nice dynamic map overlaying the trail and your postion, like Google maps. It has town guides and social commenting on way points which makes it very useful for verifying that water sources are running.
